Working with Composites
The composite industry isn't only run by technical people - there are a plethora of non-technical staff that need to understand composites to help a business run efficiently .
This tailorable Working with Composites training package is designed for a range of non-technical roles to help navigate the industry out there.

While operational managers and directors can use this course, we would recommend out Managing with Composites or Directing with Composites packages.
What is covered?
This course requires no prior knowledge about composites. This is done a everyone who attends this course will go on our Introduction to Composites course first. This will cover what composites are, the materials and manufacturing methods as well as a hands on element. See the individual course page to find out more.
Added to this course, are a range of half day topics that will look at different areas. Click below to find out more.
This section looks at a range of supply chain issues including:
- Typical suppliers and what they are geared towards
- Understanding product codes and names
- Influences on lead times
- Specifying composite components
NB. While international suppliers will be mentioned, this is primarily a UK supply chain focus.
This section looks at how the costs of composites are built up including:
- Influences on raw material cost
- Associated recurring and non-recurring costs of different manufacturing methods
- Lifed materials and components (moulds, resins, etc.)
- Tips on costing up composite production jobs
This section gives an overview of some of the common health and safety concerns within composites including:
- Common risks with different manufacturing processes
- Risks from material handling
- Common defences against hazards
- What emergency procedures should be considered
While not directly against the criteria, this course provides supporting information towards ISO 45001
This section gives an overview of some of the common health and safety concerns within composites including:
- The range of environmental risks associated to common materials
- Risks common to different manufacturing processes
- Common defences against hazards
- What emergency procedures should be considered
While not directly against the criteria, this course provides supporting information towards ISO 14001
This section gives an overview of some quality controls used when dealing with composites
- Typical systems used to capture data throughout a composite lifecycle
- Interpreting data captured
- Expected information from suppliers
- Pitfalls of implementing quality tools within composite processes
While not directly against the criteria, this course provides supporting information towards ISO 9001
This section covers what different composite factories might contain including:
- General layout an different process flows
- Key equipment needed for different processes
- Services needed for general and specific processes
- Common small tools and general ancillaries needed
This section looks at what a range of workforce and qualification topics including:
- What “typical” workforce might included
- What skill set groups are commonly found
- What qualifications are available across multiple levels
- Tips on how to assess candidates
NB the qualifications mentioned here are UK specific only
How long and how much?
At a minimum, this course is 2 days long allowing for the Introduction to Composites module and then 2 half day modules. Each day would be expected to last between 0900 and 1630 and would be expected to run consecutively.
More half day modules can be added on to increase the length as long as needed. Options are also available to have a week of all the modules with different staff members dropping into the relevant sessions as needed.
This package would costs £430 per person with group sizes up to 10 people*. Additional half days would cost an additional £100 per person.
*minimum course size is 4 people for the Introduction module
